Transferred Resurrection
Transferred Resurrection
2024 Road paint on Asphalt, Site specific (approximately 250 sq meter) Teurastamo, Helsinki Photos and video by Angel Gil |
My permanent painting installation Transferred Resurrection was commissioned by Kaupunkitilat, a real estate management company owned by the City of Helsinki and responsible, among other things, for maintaining and developing the Helsinki Wholesale Market, including the Slaughterhouse Yard (in Finnish: Teurastamo) where Kunsthalle Kohta is located.
The painting, measuring around 250 m2, is executed in white, black and red road paint on the asphalt between the Teurastamon portti meat restaurant and Kohta. In fact the best way to get an overview of Transferred Resurrection is to look out of the kunsthalle’s windows on the second floor. (There is always free entrance to Kohta.) A temporary mural by me, based on ancient Chinese myths about the creation of the Universe, was on display at Kohta in 2021 as part of the exhibition ’First International Festival of Manuports’. My new painting centres on the image of a skeleton turning itself into new forms of life, spawning flowers, trees and fantastical animals. Rather than burrowing into what used to go on in the surrounding red-brick buildings, the installation opens up to the imagination of the viewers now walking or driving over it, and to the sky above, with its promise of possible futures. |
